Not Like Other People edition by Lesley Hayes Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
From the first to the last, these short stories captivate the reader with their thoroughly engaging characters. I am a fan of character driven stories and Lesley Hayes is brilliantly adept at creating believable characters that are easy to identify with. Why? Well, because Lesley concentrates on the inner struggle, the desires, hopes, dreams and mistakes that people make. Her characters are not squeaky clean and bland, but have real emotions and real dilemmas to overcome.
Each narrative is fresh and I never once thought I was reading the same character or plot line again. Each voice was distinct and each snippet of ‘life’ a journey into the maelstrom of human nature and all its complexities. I enjoyed ‘The Food of Love’. The character Elsie, is so wonderfully flawed, yet totally endearing that I could not help identify with her. The use of food throughout the narrative to describe her relationship with Sheridan is wonderfully witty, and I even liked the narrator talking directly to the reader. Being an actor for many years I of course enjoyed ‘Waiting in the Wings’, the bitchiness between fellow Thespians was spot on. The only niggle I had was the over use of 'he said, she said' throughout.
This is a funny, poignant and utterly readable collection of short stories
A collection of well-written tales which will appeal to many readers of short stories.
I follow the theory that a short story should take place over a short time span; hours or days, perhaps weeks, but not longer. An author like this one can get away with stretching the rules.
Lesley is an accomplished writer and has a flair for storytelling. If you enjoy deep and meaningful descriptions of characters and the sense of a miniaturised novel, this is a collection for you. The plots are interesting and intricate. The characters are well drawn and rounded, which takes skill, and the endings are not always what is expected.
I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of short stories by Lesley Hayes. It seems pretty much the whole of human nature is on display here and diverse, complex characters leap from the pages. I was gripped from start to finish. A crucial element in story-telling is to be able to empathise with the characters involved. And I cared, very much. This is of great credit to Lesley Hayes who clearly writes from the heart and the deep well of experience. Throughout each tale there is the meandering thread of humanity, a tolerant acceptance that all of us are imperfect, and yet continue to strive, often forlornly, for love and understanding. The fact that time and again we fall short of this ideal makes us, well, human. I await, with great expectation, the next set of stories!
A truly fascinating and poignant anthology of ten short character driven stories that centre on the lives, loves, and emotions of its characters; just as in real life, not every character here is one we sympathise with, and nor does every story end with a ‘happy ever after’ conclusion - stories that are sometimes funny, sometimes sad, occasionally heart warming, but which never fail to captivate the reader’s full attention.
In addition to the stories, there is an informative preface outlining the author’s approach to writing these tales, and how they differ from writing from that of a novel, giving the reader a real insight into them right from the start.
Although each story is entirely different in its theme, scenarios, and characters, the writing style remains consistent, characterised by crisp sharp sentences and dialogue, with just the right balance of description and dialogue to drive each story forward and keep the reader intrigued and entertained throughout. What was especially impressive about the dialogue was that despite there being ten different stories, and many more characters to contend with, each character still possessed their own unique voice, personality and attributes, and the imagery and descriptive prose of each never fell into any sort of predictable pattern.
Many of the stories don’t follow the usual short story format of a clever plot-line followed by the customary twist in the tale ending, instead concentrating on the subtle interactions between the characters, and whereas many short stories rely on the reader’s imagination to ponder on the ‘before and after’ of the story, here the reader is treated to brief yet fascinating self-contained interludes of the character’s lives, which allow you to really enjoy and immerse yourself ‘in the moment’ so to speak. Yes, each story ends in such a way as to either enlighten or surprise the reader, but the endings are mostly of the more subtle or gentle ‘aha’ moment.
Anyone who likes their reading to challenge their perceptions as well as entertaining them will not be disappointed Intelligent and well written, highly entertaining and thought provoking, I cannot recommend this anthology more highly!
